The art and landscape gardener Johan
Wilhelm Merle accepted the position as
head-gardener at the Bad Homburger Castle.
He thus followed his father in law Hackel
who had planted the famous Lebanon
Cedar tree in the castle grounds in 1820.
In 1866 his son and successor Georg Karl
Merle - also head-gardener to the castle and
good friend of the famous lndscape architect
Josef Peter Lenné - aquired the princes
garden which had belonged to the last
Bad Homburger Landgraf Ferdinand. To this
day this garden is still the domicile of the
Merle family.
Until his son Adolf Merle took over , he
leased the property to his brother who opened
a cafe and restaurant, the "Ferdinand Garden".
In 1891 the art and landcape gardener Adolf
Merle founded the nursery in the Ferdinands
Garden and produced as well as sold fruit trees
on the 2.2 has grounds.
From 1932 his son Theodor Merle, a gardener
with master degree, took over and continued
the family buiseness and tradition.
He added a large assortment of decorative
shrubs and vegetables.
In 1969 Theodor Merles daughter Annelie
Merle took charge of the nursery. She also
holds a gardeners master degree.
She introduced the productuion of cut flowers
and bedding plants and thus started to sell to
private customers.
Leo Peselmann who married Annelie Merle
joined the nursery in 1974. Leo Peselmann is a
tree expert and holds also a master degree in
gardening. He enlarged the production of conifers,
fruit trees, shrubs as well as trees.

During the years the production of plants in
containers and perennials expanded substantially.
Today trees, shrubs, perennials and bedding plants
are grown on 12ha (120.000sqare meters) and are
mainly sold to private customers in the beautiful
landscaped selling areas of 4 has
(40.000 sqare meters).
